KATHMANDU, June 2: Regardless of whether you're just starting out in your career or looking for a new job, there are some things you should consider. As a fresh graduate, we're often so pleased to get a job offer that we jump at the opportunity without giving it much thought. And this could also happen to us if we've made up our mind to quit the present job and switch to something new.
Questions you should answer before end of the year
Apart from the basic questions of job requirements, salary, work timing and holidays, there are quite a number of things you should seriously consider before saying 'yes' to that job. Evaluate a job offer seriously so that both you and the company emerge winners.
How is the work environment?A good work environment really keeps your spirit high during bleak moments. A firm yet flexible boss and helpful colleagues who trust and respect you add value to your day at work. With such positivity around, you will enjoy coming in to work each day. So ask around about the company and its work culture before agreeing to the offer. Listen carefully to the answers.
Will this add to my long term career goals?
When you're going through the job offer, do think about how it will help you in the long run. You must have some idea about how you'd like your career to map out ultimately. It's great to try new things. But it's always a smart move to work with the definitive goal in mind. Like, if you're enthusiastic about making a career in banking, work toward that instead of trying a stint in advertising. Don't get side tracked from your long term goals.
How long will the commute time be?
We often spend a lot of our time commuting or stuck in traffic. Unless this is the job you absolutely have your heart set on, the long commute hours can be a deterrent. And rightly so. Because you will be wasting precious time commuting to and fro work when you could use that time to do something else. Whether you own a vehicle or travel by public buses, you are sure to get tired after spending so much time on the road. You could use those valuable hours to do something productive or simply rest up.
Will this job give me satisfaction?
Don't be tempted by the salary alone. Sometimes, that's what happens. Be objective and consider whether your job will give you satisfaction. Once the novelty of being in a new office with new people wears off, your duties are what remains and they should be interesting and challenging. What you do should be productive and satisfying. Keep these in mind before taking up that offer.
What are the other opportunities in this job?
When your interviewer encourages you to ask questions, you should ask about the company's policies regarding promotions, salary increment, trainings for employees, etc.
If you're not satisfied with the salary you've been offered, maybe the company will review it when your probation period is up. Inquire about career advancement opportunities.
