In his separate meetings with NC President Sushil Koirala, CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal and UCPN (Maoist) Vice-chairman Narayankaji Shrestha on Sunday, the president said that there would be a serious crisis in the country if the deadlock is not resolved as the top posts in the constitutional bodies are falling vacant one after the other, while the one-third budget has almost been spent. The president also urged the leaders to choose from one of the two options - fresh CA polls or CA revival -- at the earliest.[break]
According to Shrestha, the president expressed deep concerns over the failure of the parties to forge consensus. “The president has clearly said that the political parties themselves should find a way out of the current political crisis. His main concern is over the delay in consensus among the political parties,” said Shrestha.
According to Shrestha, he told the president that promulgation of the new statute through the revived CA and settling the contentious issues through the freshly elected CA was the best option to resolve the deadlock. “I emphasized that we should be cautious of the elements that want to create political instability and disorder in the country,” Shrestha told Republica.
The Maoist leader reiterated that they were ready to form a new national consensus government if there was an agreement to promulgate new statute through the revived CA so as to institutionalize the achievements of April movement.
However, NC President Koirala and UML Chairman Khanal reiterated during their meeting with the president that the current government led by Baburam Bhattarai must step down first. The two leaders also argued that fresh CA election is the only option to resolve the deadlock.
Taking to mediapersons NC President Koirala said he told the president that even his party is in favor of fresh election as reinstatement of CA is not possible. Koirala said fresh polls would also be in line with the Supreme Court ruling.
Sources said President Yadav is also in favor of fresh election in view of the apex court ruling and failure of parties to forge consensus.
Right after his meeting with Koirala, President Yadav held talks with UML Chairman Khanal. Emerging from the meeting, Khanal said he told the president that a consensus government should be formed to end the deadlock. But since the Maoist Chairman has proposed CA revival as the option to end the deadlock, the issue needs further discussion between the parties.
Talking to Republica, Khanal said he also informed the president that the opposition parties are planning to launch a fresh movement after the Tihar festival if the Maoists continue to pose obstacle to consensus.
A day earlier, Yadav had held consultations with senior UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal.
