Prez, PM, Speaker express grief over Koirala's death

KATHMANDU, Feb 9: President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Speaker Onsari Gharti as well as various political parties, organizations and personalities have expressed grief over the death of former prime minister and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala.

Issuing a letter of condolence on Tuesday, President Bhandari said that she was shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden death of Koirala, who contributed his life for the cause of democracy in the country.Stating that Koirala's death is a huge loss to the country, she also said that he would be remembered for playing crucial role as a prime minister in promulgating the new constitution through the Constituent Assembly.

Similarly, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is also chairman of CPN-UML, also expressed his grief over death of former Prime Minister Koirala on Tuesday. Oli had succeeded Koirala as the prime minister.

Stating that he was deeply saddened by Koirala's death, Oli, in a statement issued by the CPN-UML, has said that Koirala's untimely demise was an incomparable lose to the country which is in the phase of implementation of the new constitution.

Prime Minster Oli said that building a peaceful Nepal through effective implementation of the new constitution and institutionalization of democracy in the country can be a true tribute to Koirala.

Issuing another letter of condolence on Tuesday, Speaker Onsari Gharti also said that she was grieved by the sudden demise of Koirala's. "No one can undermine Koirala's significant role in formulating the new constitution through Constituent Assembly. His presence will be missed when the country will move toward economic development following implementation of the new constitution," reads a statement issued by Speaker's Office on behalf of Speaker Gharti.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal, chairman of UCPN-Maoist, also expressed sadness over the sudden death of Koirala. In a letter of condolence issued by his party, Dahal said that his death was an incomparable loss at a time when the country was in the phase of implementation of the new constitution.

Similarly, Kamal Thapa, chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPP-N), also expressed grief over the untimely death of Koirala. In a letter of condolence issued on Tuesday, Thapa, stated that he and his party were saddened by Koirala's death and that his party offers sympathy to the grieving family of late Koirala and Nepali Congress.

Expressing sadness over Koirala's death, former Prime Minister Madav Kumar Nepal of CPN-UML said that Koirala will be remembered for his significant role as a prime minister in formulating the new constitution as well as tabling constitution amendment proposal in the parliament to address the demands of the agitating parties. "He was also flexible while nominating heads and members of various constitutional bodies based on political understanding," he added.

Nepal Workers and Peasants Party and Federation of Nepali Journalists, among others, also expressed grief over Koirala's death.
