KATHMANDU, Sept 10: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is preparing to organize the One-day National Cricket Tournament in late September that will serve as selection event for the second round of the ICC World Cricket League Championship.

Nepal is scheduled to play two 50-over List-A matches of the championship against Papua New Guinea (PNG) on November 28 and 30. Nepal will host PNG for the matches at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground, Kirtipur.According to Chhumbi Lama, chief operating officer of CAN, the cricket governing body of Nepal is planning to hold the one-day national tournament in view of the championship. "CAN is preparing to organize the tournament before the championship," he said.

CAN had failed to organize selection events for number of international tournaments recently.

Nepal participated in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers jointly organized by Scotland and Ireland in July. Instead of organizing T20 selection event, the players were picked up based on their performance during a separate one-day national tournament.

Not only that, CAN also did not organized selection events for the ACC U-19 Premier League held in Malaysia from August 28 to September 3. Nepal finished runner-up in the tournament.

Although CAN was preparing to hold the U-19 national tournament to select players for the ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers scheduled to be held in Malaysia from October 14 to 23, it later cancelled the event.

CAN Acting General Secretary Uttam Karmacharya had informed that the cricket governing body was unable to hold the U-19 selection tournament due to the current political situation.

U-19 squad to be announced on Friday

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is set to announce the final squad of the U-19 team on Friday for the upcoming ICC U-19 World Cup Qualifiers in Malaysia.

Nepali U-19 cricket team coach Jagat Tamata on Thursday said that the final squad will be confirmed by Friday.CAN was earlier scheduled to announce the squad (14 regular and four reserved players) by Thursday.

CAN's Chhumbi Lama also confirmed that the squad will be finalized on Friday.

In Malaysia, Nepal along with Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and the USA will vie for the only place available for next year's U-19 World Cup to be hosted by Bangladesh.
