Latest death toll from quake climbs to 8,635

KATHMANDU, May 23 : The latest death toll from the April 25 earthquake and its aftershocks has reached 8,635.

Due to the quake 1,728 people in the valley have lost their lives, 57 were killed in eastern region, altogether 6,398 were killed in the Central Development Region alone.


Similarly, 450 people in the Western Region and two in the Mid-Western Region were also killed.

Likewise, 12,828 in the valley, 455 in the Eastern Region, 7,193 in the Mid-Western Region, 13,032 in the Western Region, 36 persons in the Mid-Western Region and two in the Far-Western Region were injured in the quake.

According to police, the dead bodies of the 8,570 people have been handed over to their kin. Of the total injured 6,018 have been undergoing treatment at different hospitals in and out of the valley.

In the quake 240 foreign nationals have also lost their lives. The number of the disappeared foreigners has reached 106.

Police said that the distribution of the relief materials like food stuffs, trapuline, is continuing in the quake-hit areas.

Some 44,629 police have been deployed for removing remains of the buildings, maintaining hygiene, security patrolling, search and rescue operation in the quake-ravaged zones.
