KATHMANDU, Feb 23: The newly elected working committee of the Democratic Lawyers´ Association (NDLA) on Wednesday said that the association will not compromise independence of the judiciary in the new constitution under any pretext.

Organizing a press meet in the capital, the newly elected working committee members of the DLA said, “Free, fair, transparent and competent judiciary is essential for the strengthening of democracy, human rights and civil liberties in the country.”[break]

DLA´s views regarding judiciary come at a time when the CA is still undecided over whether judiciary should continue to enjoy its independence.

The DLA members said that they would leave no stone unturned to ensure independence of the judiciary, democratic rights and civil liberties.

“We will exert maximum pressure for timely promulgation of the constitution,” said DLA President Yadu Natha Khanal.

The DLA also urged the CA to promulgate the new constitution within stipulated timeframe and take the peace process to its logical conclusion.

“The political parties must follow past agreements. Consensus is a must among parties and Maoist army should be integrated through the Special Committee,” Khanal added.

The association has also warned that it would launch protests if leaders do not focus on the remaining tasks of peace process.
