A police team had gone to Hemja to reopen the highway when the locals tried to stop them and the police used force, Deputy Superintendent of Police Tulsi Adhikari said. Police said five policemen were injured in the incident. A total of 170 Nepal Police and 50 Armed Police personnel were deployed to resume transportation services on the highway.
The locals have been obstructing the highway for four days, demanding compensation to the families of two youth who were killed in an accident on Thursday. The victims´ kin, organizing a press conference on Sunday, said the bus entrepreneurs had not come to agreement even after they halved their compensation demand. They had initially demanded Rs 3 million in compensation.
Bishnu Timalsina and Sagar Sapkota, both 16, had died when a bus hit their motorcycle last Thursday.
