KATHMANDU, Jan 25: Resham Lal Chaudhary, patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party Nepal, will not be allowed to contest the upcoming House of Representatives election.
The Supreme Court on Sunday dismissed his petition against the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to cancel his candidacy.
EC rejects Resham Chaudhary’s candidacy
Chaudhary had filed a writ on January 23 challenging the EC’s decision. A single bench of Judge Bal Krishna Dhakal, issued only a show-cause order, effectively preventing his nomination from being reinstated. The next hearing is set for January 29.
Chaudhary, who filed his candidacy from Kailali Constituency–1, approached the SC after the EC cited his past criminal record and imprisonment as grounds for canceling his nomination.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment as one of the main masterminds behind the Tikapur carnage of August 24, 2015, in which eight police personnel and a two-year-old child were killed. However, he received presidential clemency and was released even before the court issued the full text of its verdict.
