KATHMANDU, April 6: Former Chief of Army Staff Gadul Shamsher JB Rana on Wednesday died of a skin cancer at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at the Nepal Army Hospital in Chhauni.
According to the Nepal Army's Directorate of Public Relations former chief Rana served as Chief of the national army starting from May 15, 1991 to May 4, 1995.

Rana was the first contingent battalion commander of second United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF II) deputed in Sinai Peninsula of Egypt in 1973 as peacekeeping mission.
Rana's role in establishing the Army Welfare Fund and modernizing the army is highly appreciated in the army circle.
CoAS Rajendra Chhetri and top army officials paid their last tributes to the deceased former general before he was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat. Born in 1936, Rana joined the force in 1956.
