KATHMANDU, Jan 17: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Sujata Koirala has formally accepted the newly elected Central Working Committee (CWC) led by Gagan Thapa, stating that the leadership change reflects the will of the people and the aspirations of the youth.
Issuing a video message on social media on Saturday, Koirala said the changes seen within the party should be embraced positively, stressing that fear of change would only hold the party back.
Congratulating Thapa on his election through the Special General Convention, she urged him to lead the party responsibly while remaining rooted in BP Koirala’s ideology and the organisational legacy built by Girija Prasad Koirala.

“Many changes have taken place in the country. We should not be afraid of change. Young people, society and the Nepali people are seeking change and it should be embraced with a smile,” she said. “There has been a change in the NC. A new president has come. I congratulate Gagan Thapa and urge him to steer the party forward.”
Koirala clarified that the party has not split, but has merely undergone a change, noting that its election symbol, four-star flag and organisational structure remain intact. She called on party leaders and cadres to accept the transition in a positive spirit.
She also urged respect for the people’s mandate rather than prolonged legal interpretations, noting that Thapa was elected unopposed at the Special General Convention. Koirala added that further changes and new leadership could emerge through the party’s regular General Convention scheduled after the election.
Meanwhile, the faction led by Sher Bahadur Deuba has announced plans to move the Supreme Court on Sunday, claiming the Election Commission failed to deliver justice.
