KATHMANDU, July 23: Food court operators at most of the shopping malls say that their business has increased by around 30 percent compared to last year, mainly due to an increase in the number of people visiting the malls, be it for shopping, to see a movie or just to hang out with friends.

With the number of malls increasing in the capital, the trend of mall shopping has increased. In order to provide quality food to people visiting the malls, almost all the malls have opened food courts. [break]

Quality food at affordable prices, variety of food, convenient location and security, among other things, are attracting people to the food courts.

"Compared to last year, our business this year is growing by 30 percent," said Jeewan Chaudhary, manager of the Central Food Court at Civil Mall. He added that these days the trend of shopping in malls has increased and people who like to relax and quench their hunger visit the food court within the mall.

Sunil Maharjan, manager of Bits and Bites at City Center mall, said that the food court runs smoothly and these days the average number of customers reaches 9,000 per week compared to around 7,000 last year. Big Cinemas has helped increase business as those who come to watch movies also visit the food court, he said.

Mall operators say be they youths or of the older generation, everyone seems to love the idea of eating from different restaurants at the same place and food courts seem to be the only option for that.

"Fast service, variety of foods and value for money make food courts score over traditional fine dining restaurants", said Chaudhary.

As the number of people who prefers late night shows is increasing, this has helped to increase the number of foot stalls. "It gets late and people feel lazy to go home and prepare their food, and so they mostly visit our food court," Chaudhary said.

Mall operators say that they have received a positive feedback from customers so far.
