A monitoring team of Department of Commerce (DoC) on Thursday found that Everest MoMo Center at Thamel and Everest MoMo Center at Gongabu were preparing momo in a very unhygienic way. [break]
“The kitchen was very unhygienic and the storage of raw materials too was unhygienic. The staff did not maintain personal hygiene nor did they wear apron. There was no outlet for waste water in the kitchen,” said Prem Prasad Paudel, director of DoC.
The DoC, which has been stepping up its market monitoring drive, inspected momo shops, juice centers, groceries and eateries at New Road, Thamel and Gongabu area on Thursday and Friday.
During the inspection, the monitoring team found that some stores were selling expired products and items with overwritten prices. Likewise, at eateries, the kitchen staff were wearing dirty apron and seemed not to pay adequate attention to their personal hygiene. At some places there were no price menu and some of the stores had not even registered their business.
“At New Road, the stores were selling packed products without necessary information and ingredients mentioned on the packet and did not have certificates from Nepal Bureau of Standards and Meteorology,” said Paudel, the director of DoC.
The monitoring team inspected Jagadamba Kirana Store, Bhagwati Khadya Store and Mechi Kirana Bhandar at New Road, Annapurna Mai and New Everest MoMo Center at Thamel, Everest MoMo Center, Annapurna Gulmi Nawalparasi Tandoori, Loktantra Pokhreli, Ilameli Staff Bhojanalay, Palchoki Mai Bhojanalaya, Nepalgunj Lumbini Tandoori, Lumbini Argakhachi Kimdada Bhojanalaya and Goras and Juice Shop at Gongabu.
“Most shops were found making the same mistakes. We request the consumers to be aware and check the dates and labels carefully before buying any products,” said Paudel.
The DoC has asked the proprietors to correct their mistakes and submit necessary documents of registration and certificate of NBSM and the proof of correction within 7 days depending on the fault.
Ilameli Staff Bhojanalaya and Everest MoMo Center at Gongabu, which were operating without registering their businesses, have been asked to register as soon as possible and submit the proof of registration within 7 days to the department.
DoC using ‘human error’ excuse to shield suspicious employees
