Students, backed by the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), torched the police office of Bankul. The waiting room, furniture and a motorbike, among other things, were burnt to ashes, according to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Dhananjay Panuhar, in-charge at the police office.
"Around 200 students accompanied by UDMF protesters set ablaze the waiting room of the police office," Panuhar said. Some locals and businessmen persuaded the irate students not to destroy the police office further since it was their own property, ASI Panuhar informed.
Earlier on Sunday, Tabrej Alam, 16, of Tejapaked VDC-1 was killed in a police firing at Gaur. The deceased was a tenth grader of Juddha Higher Secondary School in Gaur. He had joined the demonstrators after his school was over.
To avert an untoward incident, the local administration clamped a curfew in Gaur areas from 4 pm on Sunday. The curfew, which was relaxed from 6 am to 10 pm on Monday, was imposed again and extended in Gaur areas until further notice, according to CDO Narhari Baral.
"We're compelled to continue the curfew to curb the violent protest," CDO Baral said.
Rautahat district headquarters Gaur remained tense for the third consecutive day on Monday.
With the tabling of the constitution amendment bill by major political parties, the UDMF has intensified protests in Tarai districts since Friday.
Likewise, UDMF leaders and cadres in Birgunj also organized a rally brandishing sticks to protest the killing of the school student during Gaur demonstration.
"The state has killed yet another person in Gaur. We took to streets to intensify protest to pressure the government to stop killings and address the demands of Madhesis," said Shiv Patel, a local Madhesi leader.
