The UML´s disciplinary body has sought explanations from the disgruntled leaders including the party´s vice-chairman Ashok Rai, Gurung, Ram Chandra Jha, Bijay Subba, Rakam Chemjong, Rajendra Shrestha and Rijwan Ansari, among others, for campaigning for delineation and naming of provinces based on single-ethnic identity.[break]
"I see no point in furnishing clarification to the disciplinary body, which has acted in a biased manner," Gurung told Republica. He argued that if the disciplinary body is independent and has no bias against any leader then it should first seek clarification from party chairman Jhalanath Khanal, Vice chairman Bamdev Gautam and politburo member Pradeep Nepal, among others, who have breached party policy and official decisions.
Gurung argued that even party chairman Khanal deserves action for signing a secret seven-point deal with UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal against the party´s stated policy last year when Khanal was prime minister.
He also said Vice chairman Gautam deserves action because he had collected signatures of around 60 UML lawmakers with a plan to topple the government headed by UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal some two years ago.
"The disciplinary commission that cannot take action against Khanal and Gautam has no moral authority to seek clarification from dissident leaders just because we are pressing the party leadership to accept federalism based on single-ethnic identity," Gurung explained.
He also claimed that he has enough evidences to prove that the disciplinary body led by Amrit Bohara is biased against them.
Gurung asked if the dissident leaders need to furnish clarifications before the body just for campaigning in favor of ethnicity-based federalism, why the same policy is not applied in the case of Pradip Nepal and other leaders who have been campaigning that federalism in any form is unsuitable in Nepal. The UML´s central committee meeting recently decided to stand for a federal model based on multi-ethnic identity.
