KATHMANDU, May 13: As 28 CPN-UML lawmakers close to a faction led by senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal prepare to resign from their posts to pave the way for Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to form a majority government, Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has held a telephone conversation with leader Nepal in an apparent bid to convince the dissident faction.

According to a UML leader, Subash Chandra Nembang, Chairman Oli himself called Nepal ahead of Thursday’s Standing Committee meeting and urged the latter to sit for talks and sort out things. “He [Oli] asked leader Nepal to hold further discussions. Comrade Madhav asked him to wait for two hours,” Nembang said.

“Nepal, however, has not come into contact though it is already 12:40 PM,” Nemang said. Oli called Nepal around 9:30 AM.

Earlier on Thursday morning, a Standing Committee meeting of the UML revoked the action taken against four leaders of the dissident faction - Madhav Nepal, Bhim Rawal, Surendra Pandey and Ghanashyam Bhusal - in a bid to ‘save party unity.’

Leader Nepal, however, is reportedly holding consultations with legal experts ahead of “the move to resign en masse”.
