CHITWAN, July 10: Business entrepreneurs closed down the markets in Narayangad on Tuesday protesting the detention of five persons, arrested for setting a government vehicle on fire.

Police had detained Bijaya Lama and four others for setting ablaze a vehicle belonging to the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) protesting a raid conducted on a local shop on June 6 on suspicion of evading taxes. [break]

Marketplaces have completely been shut due to the strike. However, police have cleared traffic obstruction by the strike enforces on the highway.

Earlier, a “flying squad” led by director of the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) Bharat Raj Subedi had fanned out to Narayanghat to conduct the raid following a tip off that three firms -- Laxmi Narayan Bastralaya, Bhagwat Bastralaya and Naulo Pasal - were involved in revenue evasion.

Local businessmen staged protest as the squad raided the shops before sealing Laxmi Narayan Bastralaya and Bhagawat Bastralaya at Shahid Chowk, with the situation going beyond police control.
