Black Pepper: A complete wining and dining package!

Located at Jhamsikhel, in Kupondol Heights, Black Pepper has been in business for almost three years and shouldn’t be missed when you are in the vicinity. Though the place specializes in Continental foods, you can get everything from pastas, pizzas and sizzlers to noodles, momos and Nepali Thali that makes it the perfect stop-by for anyone.

If you’re in the mood for a night out with your friends and family, the restaurant won’t disappoint you as it is unlike some restaurants around town where the drinks are good but food isn’t, and vice versa. The well-stocked bar beautifully compliments the diverse food choices that the restaurant caters.[break]

A starter dish, Buff Sukuti, garnished with herbs and garlic is drool-worthy. Crunchy and light, the dish will tide you up while your main course is being prepared. There are other light starters to choose from, the options for vegetarian and non-vegetarian being equal.

The Charcoal Jalkapur Fish that’s marinated and grilled is soft and luscious. But if you don’t fancy strong flavors, then steer clear of this one because the gravy is too mustard heavy. The Chicken Cordon Bleu, however, is a sheer pleasure. With ham and cheese stuffed inside grilled chicken breasts, this delicacy is served with salad and fries on the side and the combination is just perfect. And if you’re in a red meat mood, the steaks are wonderful too.

You can’t go wrong with ordering anything here as most of the items are cooked to perfection. But steer clear of ordering chicken wings that are more like chicken coated with breadcrumbs and then deep fried. They just aren’t anything much to rave about.

The staffs are friendly and vigilant and almost everything on the menu is reasonably priced as well besides being incredibly delicious. But good things come at a price, and you have to spend some precious minutes waiting in eager anticipation as the service is a tad bit too slow. But then again, if the hungry growls are too much for you to bear, then you can very easily pick up something from the bakery to rein in your hunger pangs for a while.

If you have room left for dessert after your meal, there are lots of good choices. Their brownie is one of the best you can find. They’re shareable, good and there’s chocolate involved, and you can hardly ever go wrong with chocolate. Black Pepper has its very own baker who prepares an array of rich-looking cakes and brownies.

Even when you feel you can’t take another bite, you’ll be reaching out for the desserts just because you just can’t get enough of the swoon-inducing flavors. From Black Forest cakes and pineapple pastries to chocolate tarts and brownie sprinkled with white chocolate flakes, the bakery items are unlike anything you’ve ever tasted.

The ambience is delightful and up to the mark. From outdoor seating arrangements to indoor fine dining area, the restaurant is well planned and structured. A courtyard in the center of the place, complete with large carved pillars, gives the vibe of an ethnic Newar setting.

Binod Shrestha, one of the owners, says the idea they had in mind when Black Pepper was being built was to make it a small space with different options, and they have to a large extent maintained it till now. A lot of attention has been paid to the details and a lot of care has gone into keeping the place basic and simple. Barrels have been repurposed and are used as tables at the bar area. The feel is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced in any restaurant in the capital and hence it’s a very refreshing and welcome change.

So whenever you have a hankering for some good food or want to relax and unwind, head over to Black Pepper and enjoy yourself; but be prepared to wait a little to be served.
