KATHMANDU, Nov 19: Ever considered becoming a baker to earn your bread and butter?

To work as a baker, one doesn’t require certification or a degree, although that will be an advantage when you apply for a job at manufacturers, bakeries, restaurants or even start up your own bakery. [break]

While a high-school education is sufficient to start training for this job, a culinary arts degree and certificate can be obtained.

These degrees can be gained from institutions in Nepal such as Nepal Academy of Tourism & Hotel Management (NATHM) in Rabi Bhawan, Standard Tourism & Hotel Training Center in New Baneshwar and Silver Mountain School of Hotel Management in Lainchour.

Most bakers enter the field as apprentices. As you work under the supervision of experienced bakers, these apprenticeship programs will help further your knowledge and skills as a baker and advance in your career. In this career, experience is much more important than theoretical knowledge.

While this career option has the advantage of needing a comparatively low level of training and gives you the opportunity to choose to apply in a variety of places from manufacturers to local bakery shops, the job of a baker can be physically demanding, requiring you to start work very early in the day to prepare items and under hot and noisy conditions.
