KATHMANDU, Jan 11: The nation is celebrating the 304th birth anniversary of nation-builder Prithvi Narayan Shah with various programs. Born in 1779 BS, Shah’s birthday is celebrated as National Unity Day to honor his contributions to the unification of modern Nepal.

As in previous years, officials pay tribute by laying garlands at Prithvi Narayan Shah’s statue in front of the West Gate of Singha Durbar, the country’s main administrative building.

On this occasion, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) is hosting a tea program, inviting the prime minister, top leaders of political parties, former prime ministers, and other distinguished personalities. In Shah’s birthplace, Gorkha, special events are organized annually to mark the day.

The Nepal Army also honors Shah every year by laying garlands at his life-size statue in the Army Headquarters complex at Jangi Adda.

King Shah of Gorkha united the scattered Baise and Chaubise states with enthusiastic support and participation from the people, overcoming various social, economic, and geographical challenges. He died in 1831 BS at the age of 52. Shah ascended the throne at age 20 and launched the unification campaign after defeating both internal and external powers.

This day is observed to recall shared history, culture, and pride, inspire unity amidst diversity, and honor the contributions of ancestors who worked to bind the nation together. It also reminds citizens that prioritizing national interest over personal gain is fundamental to building a strong and inclusive country. For the younger generation, the day emphasizes dedication, service, and responsibility toward the motherland.

Shah’s unification campaign laid the foundation for national independence and sovereignty, helping Nepal remain one of the world’s oldest independent nations. His famous guidance, including “both giving and taking bribes are enemies of the nation,” remains relevant today in promoting good governance and reducing corruption. Considering Nepal’s geography, he described the country as a “yam between two stones.”

On the occasion of Prithvi Jayanti and National Unity Day, the Vice President, Speaker, political leaders, and prominent national figures have extended their greetings and best wishes.
