APF players dominate men's badminton

KATHMANDU, Jan 2: Armed Police Force (APF) players dominated the men´s singles badminton during the second day of the Eighth Nationwide Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Tournament on Monday.



APF players won seven out of the eighteen matches in the men´s singles category while Nepal Police Club (NPC) players secured five wins as Bikash Shrestha, who is Nepal´s number one badminton palyer, and Sajan Krishna Tamrakar of Police in eased past into the next round.[break]



Ratnajit Tamang of APF thrashed NPC player Pushpa Banskota 21-5, 21-13 and Pankaj Chand of APF secured a 21-10, 21-11 win over Lalitpur´s Gyanendra Poudel during the matches played at the APF Headquarters, Halchowk. Likewise, Bivek Shrestha of APF defeated Dawa Sherpa of Kathmandu 21-3, 21-10 while Shrestha´s clubmate Irfan Ansari beat Anand Gurung of Nawalparasi 21-4, 21-7.



Other APF players to register victories on Monday were Sudip Sedhai, Indra Mahat and Bhupendra Malla. Sedhai saw off Purna Thapa of Kathmandu 21-16, 21-9, Mahat thrashed Umesh KC of Baglung 21-3, 21-7 while Malla fought back from first set down to register a 14-21, 24-22, 21-7 win over Rajkumar Shrestha of Dhading.

Nepal´s No 1 badminton player Bikash Shrestha had little trouble dispatching Mahendra Dhakal of Parbat with a score of 21-10, 21-12. His clubmate Tamrakar also secured a comfortable 21-7, 21-10 win over Prakash Shrestha of Sindhupalchowk.



Likewise, Deepak Bohara of NPC defeated Rajendra Pawi 21-3, 21-12, Bishnu Katwal of NPC breezed past Narayan Dhakal of Chitwan 21-7, 21-12 and Surya Thapa of NPC beat Bhimsen Shrestha of Dhading 21-14, 21-13. Basanta Bajracharya of Plapa, Rupak Ghimire of Jhapa, Bilal Waris of Nepal Army, Niranjan Bikram Shahi of Dang also won thier respective matches.



In the women´s section, Sara Devi Tamang of Nepal Army and Sabina Panthi of APF made it to the next round. Tamang, the winner of the recently concluded First Pushpa Lal Memorial Ranking Badminton Tournament, secured a comfortable 21-3, 21-6 win over Bishnu Khadka of Doti while Panthi also eased past Juna Shrestha 21-3, 21-10.



Ganga Bista of Kanchanpur bounced back form second set defeat to register a 21-16, 13-21, 21-18 win over Sarita Tamang of APF. Shikshya Shrestha of APF saw off Durga Sharma Bhandari of Kailali 21-06, 21-7. There were also wins for Sangeeta Dahal of Palpa, Hemkha Rai of Bhojpur and Shanta Budhathoki of Kavre.

In the Fourth APF Open Lawn Tennis Tournament, Chhewang Lama of Kathmandu defeated Sailesh Raj Mahat 7-5, 6-4 in the men´s singles category and Raju Shreshta of Kathmandu thrashed Subodh Adhikari of NPC 6-2, 6-2.



Likewise, Atmaram Karki of Kathmandu saw off Ramji Gurung 6-3, 6-2. Dawa Sherpa of Lalitpur made it to the next round after his opponent Pratap Miktan of Kathmandu retired hurt. Santosh Khatri of Kathmandu beat Prashant Gurung 6-1, 6-0 while Raju Chhetri and Amul Regmi earned walkover.



In the men´s doubles, the pair of Chhewang Lama and Abhishek Bastola thumped Subodh Adhikari and Arun Malla of NPC 6-1, 6-2. There were also victories for the pairs of Kumar Adhikari and Atmaram Karki, Rajesh Chhetri and Raju Chhetri while the pair of Dawa Sherpa and Santosh Khatri earned walkover.
