PATNA, Feb 3: Three top Madhesi leaders -- Upendra Yadav, Rajendra Mahato and Mahendra Raya Yadav -- held an approximately hour-long meeting with Sushil Modi, one of the influential leaders of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Tuesday evening.

During the meeting, the Madhesi leaders briefed BJP leader Modi on the government's 'oppression' during the Madhes movement, and on their demands.

Sadhbhawana Party Chairperson Mahato informed the BJP leader about the reason for the Madhes movement, the government's alleged apathy and the first amendment to the constitution. He informed Modi that the rights of the Madhesis that were already enshrined in the Interim Constitution have been seized in the new constitution.

Speaking forcefully about beti-roti relations before the BJP leader, Mahato said the new constitution had disturbed the relations between India and Madhes.

In their briefing to Modi, the key leaders of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) alleged that the government had deployed the Nepal Army and Armed Police Force to open fire on Madhesis instead of addressing their peaceful movement.

All three UDMF leaders argued that the Indian government should pressure the Nepal government, which they said was discriminating against Madhesis.

Following the briefing, Modi asked for their views on the constitutional amendment. They responded that they were not included in the amendment process and it was unacceptable to them since it completely ignored their demands.

"I'll talk to the Indian government about your demands and the reasons for your disappointment," Modi told the UDMF

leaders.

"Your demands are legitimate, and they should be addressed," he added.

He assured the UDMF leaders that he would talk seriously with his government.

Before the meeting with Modi, the UDMF leaders urged Rastriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders Raghubansh Singh and Manganilal Mandal to lobby hard through the Indian government.

RJD leaders Singh and Mandal assured them that they would bring the Indian people out onto the streets and leave no stone unturned so that the Indian government would be pressured to take the Madhes issue seriously.

Earlier on Monday, the Madhesi leaders met RJD Chairperson Lalu Yadav to seek support for the Madhesi movement.

However, they could not meet Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Tuesday.

Although two of the Madhesi leaders have returned to Birgunj via Raxaul, Mahato is still in Patna. He plans to go to Biratnagar via Jogbani.
