KATHMANDU, Jan 9: Central committee members aligned with Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba have renewed calls for holding the party’s general convention ahead of the March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) election.
As many as 30 such members of the establishment faction held a separate meeting on Friday and issued appeal urging unity through dialogue and consensus.
In their appeal, the leaders stressed that the NC must reposition itself as a trustworthy political force ahead of the HoR election and to strengthen the party’s credibility and preparedness.
Deuba’s call for regular general convention stirs further chaos...
“With the HoR election approaching, it is essential to make NC a more credible and trustworthy party in the eyes of the people,” the appeal reads. “Embracing the agenda of change and transformation, the party must head into the election with new thinking and a fresh vision.”
The leaders also underlined that general convention representatives have already formally submitted written applications demanding a special general convention, arguing that their views must be respected by the leadership. “Respecting the opinion of the representatives who have demanded a special general convention, we appeal to the leadership to move forward with dialogue and consensus and enter the election with renewed energy and ideas,” the statement said.
Some of those present at the meeting are Udaya Shumsher Rana, Chin Kaji Shrestha, Rajendra KC and Bharat Kumar Shah, among others.
According to the leaders, internal differences within the party should be resolved through dialogue to ensure unity. “Keeping the upcoming election in focus, we earnestly urge the leadership to resolve disputes through dialogue and consensus, forge broad unity, and create a result-oriented environment in favour of the NC,” the appeal stated.
The move comes ahead of the special general convention scheduled for January 11 and 12 at the call of the party’s general secretaries. Some Deuba-aligned central members are also scheduled to hold further discussions in New Baneshwor later on Friday, while leaders favouring a post-election general convention are preparing for separate consultations.
