KATHMANDU, Jan 9: As many as 17 sister organisations of Nepali Congress (NC) have come out against holding a special general convention, urging the party leadership to stay united and focus on the upcoming elections.

The joint appeal was issued by establishment-aligned sister wings after general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma called for a special convention.

Stressing the current political context, the organisations said the country and the people require collective and responsible leadership, and called on all party ranks to move forward in unity.

The statement draws the attention of the party president, office bearers and the entire Central Committee, noting that with the party’s regular general convention already scheduled for May 11 to 14 and the general election set for March 5, there is no alternative but to move ahead as a united force.

The organisations also appealed to leaders, cadres and well-wishers to exercise restraint, act responsibly and advance through consensus while respecting coexistence within the party.

They further condemned the disrespectful behaviour shown towards senior leader and former vice-president Bimalendra Nidhi and other leaders while they were entering the party office to attend the Central Working Executive Committee meeting on January 6.
