KATHMANDU, Jan 6: Protests organized by Bhandaris, aides to the head priest at the Pashupatinath temple, paralyzed traffic completely in and around the Pashupatinath area Tuesday. The residents of Ward 8 and the Bhandaris started the protests Tuesday morning.

Protesters are singing Shiva bhajans (hymns) on the main road at Jayabageshwari . Organizers said the singing will continue until the evening. There is heavy security mobilization in the area.

On Monday, the Pashupati Area Development Trust announced a ban on protests in the Pashupatinath area. The area has seen daily protests following the appointment by the government of two Nepalese as priests at the temple. The Bhandaris allege that the appointments were done flouting tradition and procedures.
