Chief of Kherka Campus Yuvaraj Sedai said that the road expansion would have never been expanded had they waited for the government´s assistance. “Locals were aware of this fact. The locals themselves raised funds and offered their labor to make this possible.” [break]
According to Sedai, seven different sub committees have been formed to implement expansion project. The road section passes through ward 8 and 9 of Topgachi and ward-2, 3and 4 of Mahabhara VDC. “We have expanded and leveled the road section. We are currently digging roadside drain,” said Sedai.
“The road section is for everyone. We therefore joined hands to expand the road section,” said Login Murmu, a local of Sarangpada. Like Murmu, Tanka Prasad Prasai of Topgachi-9 also agreed to demolish a part of his house.
“The government´s apathy did not deter us. Instead it gave us a reason to work on our own. Locals even contributed money for the expansion of the road,” said Laxmi Prasad Sangraula, a local.
The committee formed for the purpose of expanding the road section has raised Rs 500 - Rs 3,000 from the locals.
“We have already completed expansion of 12 km,” said Tanka Gurung, secretary of the road user´s committee. “The work is moving ahead with a view to connecting the road section with the postal highway,” added Gurung.
Sedai said they have sought Rs 50 million from Jhapa District Development Office (DDO) for the completion the road section. “Besides we have also sought funds from donor agencies,” said Sedai.
