Govt waives Rs 4b in loans of small farmers, entrepreneurs

KATHMANDU, Feb 16: The government has waived Rs 4 billion in loans of small farmers and small entrepreneurs under the Debt Relief Program for Small Farmers and Household Entrepreneurs announced in this year’s budget. [break]



Talking to mediapersons at a function organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications, Shankar Prasad Adhikari, spokesperson of Ministry of Finance said the government has so far provided loan relief to 181,209 small borrowers. “Of the total waived amount, Rs 2.55 billion was principal while the remaining Rs 1.50 billion was outstanding interests and penalties,” Adhikari said.



The government in its budget for the current fiscal year had announced a loan waiver of up to Rs 30,000 in principal amount for small farmers and entrepreneurs affected by conflicts. Likewise, the budget had also announced waiver of interest due and all penalties on the loan amount above Rs 30,000 and up to Rs 100,000.



According to information released at the function, the government has mobilized revenue worth Rs 72.26 billion by the end of mid-February and the amount is 105.35 percent of the target set for the period.



Likewise, the government has spent a total Rs 52 billion for current expenditure, Rs 11.13 billion for capital expenditure and Rs 9.30 billion for principal repayment of debt.



As a result of the low capital expenditure than that of the same period last year, the treasury position of the government has recorded a whopping surplus of Rs 24 billion, nearly three times more than last year’s.
