Govt declares public holiday to mourn Thapa’s death

KATHMANDU, April 16: The government on Thursday declared public holiday on Friday to mourn the death of former prime minister Surya Bahadur Thapa.

Thapa passed away in course treatment at Medanta hospital in New Delhi. He was 87.RPP Deputy Spokesperson Kiran Giri informed that Thapa's dead body will be kept at his residence, Maligaun, till Friday morning. His dead body will be kept at party office, Chawahil, at 10 am tomorrow morning and in Dasharath Stadium for final tribute from 12.00 on Friday.

The final rites of late Thapa will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat.

Thapa had served as Nepal prime minister five times (1963-64, 1965-69, 1979-83, 1997-98 and 2003-04), under three kings in a political career spanning almost six decades.
