Reviewing its previous modality of distribution of the voter ID cards, the constitutional body has now decided to distribute the ID cards with support from security personnel.[break]
Earlier, the EC had planned to complete distribution of the voter ID cards through volunteers a week before the Constituent Assembly (CA) election scheduled for November 19.
The commission reviewed its previous modality of distribution of the ID cards in the wake of obstruction posed by anti-poll alliance of 33 political parties led by Mohan Baidya´s CPN-Maoist in voter education program in some districts.
According to election commissioner Dolakh Bahadur Gurung, the commission will dispatch the voter ID cards by November 14.
“The voter ID cards will be distributed to the voters on Kartik 29, Mangsir 1 and 2 [November 15, 16 and 17],” Gurung told Republica on Saturday.
He said that assistant polling officers will be entrusted with distributing the voter ID cards.
Gurung stated that the assistant polling officers will be accompanied by security personnel and other staffers during distribution of the voter ID cards to the voters.
According to sources privy to the development, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF) will provide security during distribution of the voter ID cards.
The commission on Friday had accomplished printing of over 12.1 million voter ID cards. The EC had begun printing the voter ID cards from October 27.
The commission has printed 10 voter ID cards on one A4 size paper. Security features are printed by the supplier company on the front side of the ID card, while on the back side of the ID card, there is an appeal to voters to cast their votes and a request to return lost and found ID cards to the persons concerned or to the election office or the nearest police office.
The commission has printed the name of the voter, his/her photo, address, date of birth, citizenship certificate number and ID card serial number, among other particulars, on the front side of the voter ID card.
EC officials say the voter ID card cannot be reproduced by photocopy or any other means. The ID cards are colored and just like ordinary ID cards in appearance.
The commission had awarded quotation to A-Roll Printing Company to supply the paper necessary for printing the voter ID cards.
