KATHMANDU, Sept 20: The British Council Global School Partnership (GSP) Program conducted a one-day workshop for school students on sustainable development and also on peace and conflict resolution on September 19 at Radisson Hotel.

Around seventy students from twenty six GSP schools from Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar and Butwal participated in the workshop.[break]

The program started with a forum theatre on conflict resolution which was directed by one of the British Council International Climate Champions Babu Ram Regmi.

The forum theatre was focused on the problems of a child named Prem who is bullied by his friends and teachers.

To make the presentation more interactive, Regmi asked the students who were participating to contribute their views on how such problems can be tackled.

The audience presented their views and each had a role play as they presented their views through acting. The program was to teach students about conflict resolution.

The program was then followed by a demonstration on making briquette using recycled waste materials produced in schools and homes.

This was conducted by Sanu Kaji Shrestha, Chairman of Foundation of Sustainable Technologies (FoST) and another British Council International Climate Champion Kriti Shrestha.

Vaishali Pradhan, County Manager of GSP, said that in order to bring a global dimension into our teaching and learning, it is important to make students understand subjects through practical means.

She further said that the workshop is an invaluable opportunity for students to understand the concepts of sustainable development and conflict resolution through practical demonstrations and forum theatre.

“We hope that the participants can make effective use of this knowledge and cascade it to their friends in school and the community,” she added.

The whole-day workshop was aimed at making the participants see pragmatic examples of sustainable projects, learn the process of reusing waste materials produced within their school to make briquettes and the process of using them as fuel for cooking and understand the importance of conflict resolution.
