KATHMANDU, Aug 26: People in the Kathmandu Valley are forced to commute covering their noses once again as garbage is being piled up in the streets.

The Kathmandu Metropolitan Office has been unable to collect garbage and dispose at Okharpauwa landfill site due to obstruction by locals.[break]

Local residents of Okharpauwa VDC-8 have been disrupting garbage disposal since Sunday demanding, among others, employment, an ambulance, blacktopping of three-km road in each wards of the VDC and construction of a 80-bed hospital.

Chief of KMC´s Environment Department Rabinman Shrestha said the office has been supporting locals to carry out development works but they have been obstructing garbage disposal time and again.

Inviting them for talks, he said the office can meet other demands "but job opportunity is not possible".
