US, EU and Switzerland welcome parliamentary endorsement of the Bill to amend TJ Act

KATHMANDU, Aug 14: The United States, European Union, and Switzerland have welcomed the decision of the House of Representatives (HoR) to endorse the bill to amend the Enforced Disappearances Enquiry, Truth, and Reconciliation Commission (Third Amendment) Act 2024, on Wednesday.

After deliberations on the bill tabled by Law Minister Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya, Speaker Devraj Ghimire put the bill to a vote and subsequently announced that it was passed by voice vote. The amendment of the TJ Act is expected to give momentum to the long-stalled TJ process in the country.

US Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson said he is pleased to see the TJ bill passed by parliament. “Pleased to see the transitional justice bill passed by the House of Representatives today. Congratulations to the people of Nepal. This is a meaningful moment in Nepal’s journey to shaping its own peaceful, prosperous, resilient, and democratic future,” he wrote on X.

Similarly, EU Ambassador to Nepal Veronique Lorenzo congratulated Nepal and the Nepali people for the achievement. “Congratulations to Nepal and Nepali people for this historic achievement: passing Nepal led and owned, victim-centric TRC Bill by the House of Representatives,” she wrote on X.

Ambassador Lorenzo welcomed the achievement while reiterating the EU’s commitment to full support in its implementation.

Ambassador of Switzerland to Nepal Dr. Danielle Meuwly has also joined the US and EU in welcoming the achievement made by Nepal on the transitional justice issue. “Congratulations to Nepal and Nepali, for this historic achievement on passing Nepal led, Nepal owned and victim-centric TRC Bill by the House of Representatives with consensus. Switzerland welcomes this achievement as well as reiterates its commitment for full support in its implementation,” the envoy wrote on X.
