KATHMANDU, July 31: The Social Welfare Council is going to amend the 'Social Welfare Act, 2049' as an umbrella act. The Council has prepared to amend the Act saying that it is not up to date in the changed context.
Secretary of the Council, Manoj Bhatt pointed out the need for amending the Act in the context of the recent changes in time and circumstances. In the Act, it is mentioned that the 'Social Welfare Council has been established to conduct social welfare work in an orderly manner by coordinating, mobilizing and promoting the cooperation of social organizations'.

In the same way, it is stated in the Act that 'in order to relate social welfare activities and various social welfare oriented activities to affiliate with reconstruction activities, in order to provide humanistic livelihood to the weak and helpless individual, group and community and make them enable in order to provide status and respect to the welfare oriented institutions and individuals and in order to develop a coordination between social welfare oriented institutions and organizations.’
In the fiscal year 2021/22, 54,005 non-governmental organizations joined the Council. Likewise, the affiliation of 8,757 organizations was renewed. During that period, 1,456 projects of 869 organizations were approved. In the year 2022/23, as many as 55,576 organizations are affiliated with 2,268 organizations renewing their affiliation. Secretary Bhatta said that 1,532 projects have been approved and Rs 32 billion 899 million 37 thousand projects have been approved.
It is mentioned that the work of the council is to carry out social welfare work effectively within its duties and rights, to support social organizations, to coordinate between them and to monitor, supervise and evaluate their work.
