In a response to recent news stories that Landgren ´reported´ shoddy facts to UN, UNMIN Spokesperson Kosmos Biswokarma said UNMIN shares the concern over the future of Nepal´s peace process, and reiterates its impartial commitment to supporting this process, in line with the Mission´s mandate. "Our interpretations of some recent developments may differ, but it is incorrect to imply that the Mission is biased against any particular party," he said.
The news stories quoting Nepali Congress leader Dr Ram Sharan Mahat reported that his party asked UNMIN chief Karin Landgren to correct the content of her briefing to the UN Security Council over controversy surrounding dismissal of army chief Rookmangud Katawal. Landgren had told the UNSC that NC had initially agreed to sack army chief Katawal, but it later revoked its decision during her briefing on May 5.
"We have taken note of the points raised by Dr Mahat and reaffirm the 5 May statement, given by Representative of the Secretary-General Karin Landgren, to the Security Council," he added.
Biswokarma said UNMIN recently held a productive discussion with NC Acting President Sushil Koirala and with Dr Mahat, and looks forward to continued discussion with them, and with a range of political leaders.
