UML central committee to be 115-member strong

BUTWAL, Feb 21: On the final day of the ongoing general convention of CPN-UML, its closed-door session finalized the size of the soon-to-be central committee to be 115-member. At least 45 percent of the total seats will be reserved for minorities, of which 28 percent will go for women, 25 percent for janajatis and 21 percent for Madhesi and Tarai people.



According to a delegate, Bishnu Rijal, 30 of the 115 will be alternate central committee members. Forty-seven of them will be elected in the open competition (43 full members and four alternate), 16 full members will be elected under “Zones” (14 zones, one representing the Nepalese diaspora in India, and one representing the Kathmandu Valley), and 52 will be elected under reservation (divided into half for full and alternate members).



Reservation will be set aside for women (15), janajatis (13), dalits (7), Muslims (2), Madhesi and Tarai people (11), underprivileged (2) and laborers (2).



UML´s senior most janajati leader Ashok Rai, who was the MC at the closed-door, told the floor that this was the most inclusive party committee in the world, let alone Nepal, according to Rijal.



UML convention´s election committee is yet to announce the schedule of the election of the central committee and the office-bearers.
