KATHMANDU, Dec 14: A heated dispute has surfaced in the Central Committee meeting of the CPN-UML over the party statute amendment.
The dispute emerged after moves to amend the statute to expand the number of party office-bearers and Central Committee members. The controversy has been significant enough to push back the start of the closed-door session of the party’s general convention—originally scheduled for Sunday morning—to the afternoon.

According to sources, party chair KP Sharma Oli did not formally table the statute amendment as an agenda item. However, leaders close to him raised the issue from the floor, prompting strong resistance from the opposing faction.
The dispute comes amid intensifying leadership rivalry, with senior vice-chair Ishwor Pokhrel preparing to challenge Oli for the party presidency at this general convention. Pokhrel’s camp has voiced clear opposition to any statute amendment, sources said.
Critics have also questioned the timing of the proposal, noting that the party statute was endorsed by a statute convention as recently as September 5 -7. Calls to amend a statute approved just three months ago have fueled sharp exchanges within the meeting.
