KATHMANDU, Oct 1: The first statute convention of the main opposition party, CPN-UML, is set to be held at Godawari Sunrise Convention Center in Lalitpur today. The statute convention is held to finalize the party’s policies.
The UML will hold the party’s 10th general convention to elect new leadership after the conclusion of the statute convention. “The 10th general convention will be held only after the policy and methods of the party are fixed,” Ram Bahadur Thapa, coordinator of the convention management committee and a standing committee member of UML, said. He said that the statute convention is being held for the first time to determine the party’s main agendas.

According to Thapa, the preparations for the convention have already been completed. UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli will present a political report on behalf of the party’s central committee after the inauguration ceremony. Similarly, General Secretary Ishwor Pokhrel will present the organizational proposal, while Deputy General Secretary Bishnu Prasad Poudel will present the statute amendment proposal.
The CPN-UML will pass the party’s policies for the next four years through the convention. The political report, the organizational proposal and the statute amendment proposal will be passed by the convention. Earlier, discussions were held among the UML’s standing committee and central committee members over the three documents.
According to Khimlal Bhattarai, press coordinator and member of the convention coordination committee, as many as 6,000 representatives will take part in the convention. “Our aim is to make the statute convention grand and historic,” Bhattarai said.
