UML candidate moves court against 'criminal' NC rival

KATHMANDU, Nov 15: Claiming that Nepali Congress (NC) candidate for provincial elections from Sunsari constituency no. 2, Hemkarna Paudel is a convicted criminal, CPN-UML candidate from the same constituency, Sarvadhoj Sawa has filed a writ petition against Paudel's candidacy at the Supreme Court (SC).

KATHMANDU, Nov 15: Claiming that Nepali Congress (NC) candidate for provincial elections from Sunsari constituency no. 2, Hemkarna Paudel is a convicted criminal, CPN-UML candidate from the same constituency, Sarvadhoj Sawa has filed a writ petition against Paudel's candidacy at the Supreme Court (SC).

The petition was registered at the apex court on Sunday. The court has issued a show cause notice to the defendants of the case - Returning Officer of the constituency and Paudel. 

The petition has claimed that Paudel was convicted of abduction by the Sunsari District Court and the decision was upheld by the Biratnagar High Court. The case is currently pending at the SC for the final decision. 

The petitioner has claimed that Paudel's candidacy violates Section 13 of the Provincial Assembly Member Election Act, 2017 and sought an apex court order to scrap the candidacy.
