The U-16 team will not participate in the tournament as the AFC U-16 championship is scheduled to be held on October 5 in Kathmandu. Nepali U-14 team is one of the powerful title contenders. Nepal has reached the final for five times in the last 11 editions out of which it has won the title thrice.
The Nepali team of ANFA Academy will contest in the tournament in the name of Takshashila Academy, the school where they study.
Weightlifters heading for Uzbekistan
KATHMANDU, Sept 24: A four-member Nepali weightlifting team is leaving for Uzbekistan´s capital Tashkent on Sunday to participate in the 10th Asian Senior Inter-club Male and Female Weightlifting Championship to be held from September 25 to October 2.
Olympian Kamal Bahadur Adhikari (Nepal Army Club) and Gopal Bahadur Shrestha (Ramechhap) are the participants of the championship while Amar Chandra Anil is the manager and Sunil Lal Joshi is the team coach. Adhikari is competing in above 69 kg weight category and Shrestha is competing in above 105 kg category.
Nepal is participating in the championship for second time. Earlier, Nepal participated in 2008 held in Busan, South Korea.
National Sports Council Member-Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary bade farewell to the team amidst a function in Kathmandu on Thursday, wishing them success.
Manju Felicitated
POKHARA, Sept 24: Pokhara´s volleyball player Manju Gurung was felicitated on Monday by Sangrila Bikas Bank, Pokhara for winning the popular player of the year award. The bank´s executive officer Hari Prasad Gurung felicitated Manju commending her contribution to the sports sector. The bank honored her for her talent and relentless efforts, said Manju.
Likewise, Manju was also honored by Hong Kong Beauty Institute. The institute´s operator Mina Gurung gave Manju a certificate and wrapped a shawl around her.
U-16 team play a practice match
KATHMANDU, Sept 24: Nepali U-16 football team, which is undergoing training for AFC championship qualification round, played a practice match on Thursday. U-16 boys beat Casino team (comprising players working in several casinos) 3-1 in the match.
U-16 team dominated the match against amateur players of casinos. Captain Sulav Maske, Amar Dangol and Ram Thapa scored for U-16. Sunil Shrestha, assistant coach of U-16, expressed his dissatisfaction over match practice. “We could not get a chance to play with professional footballer because of the Dashain festivities,” said Shrestha. U-16 team will challenge U-19 boys on Friday.
U-19 players are undergoing training for AFC U-19 Championship. Qualification round of AFC U-17 Championship group B will kick off on October 5.
Meanwhile, All Nepal Football Association source informed that Bahrain U-16 team is visiting Nepal 10 days earlier of the tournament. According to the source Bahrain team will be in Kathmandu by Friday night.
