Two big communist parties gear up preparations for general convention

KATHMANDU, Nov 8: The country's two largest communist parties, the CPN-UML and the CPN (Maoist Center), are busy preparing for the general convention and national conference, respectively.


The main opposition party UML has almost completed the preparations for its 10th general convention to be held in Chitwan from November 26 to 28, while the ruling CPN (Maoist Center) is preparing to hold the national conference from December 26 to 28.


The UML, which has already selected new leadership in all the ward and municipal level committees, is going to elect a general convention representative from all over the country on November 13.


UML is preparing to inaugurate the general convention on the bank of Narayani river in Bharatpur. Party Chairman KP Sharma Oli has inspected the inauguration site of the convention. He also inspected the party contact office and the closed session venue at Sauraha.

According to Surendra Pandey, Joint-Coordinator of the UML General Convention Main Management Committee, the leadership selection process will be completed on a single day. One hundred electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used for that. The UML Central Committee meeting has already given permission to use voting machines for voting in the General Convention. "Preparations have been made to make the polls and results public on the same day," said Pandey. According to him, the main management committee is preparing for the general convention in all respects.


A total of 1,999 delegates will participate in the UML General Convention. According to the UML's amended statute, the General Convention will elect a 225-member central committee with 15 office bearers including one chairperson, five vice-chairmen including senior chairperson, one general secretary, one deputy general secretary and seven secretaries. However, leaders have said that the General Convention is likely to increase the number of office bearers.


Similarly, the ruling coalition partner Maoist Center is also busy preparing for the national conference. According to Shiva Bahadur Basnet, central member of the CPN (Maoist Center) Central Committee, the party membership renewal, tole conference, ward conference, rural / municipality conference, provincial conference and national conference are scheduled to be held on different dates. "According to the schedule sent by the party center, the work is ongoing all over the country," said Basnet.


The party has appointed the district coordinators of two provinces so that there would be no dispute in the national conference.


The provincial committee of the party has appointed coordinators of district coordination committees in eight districts and co-incharges in some districts.


Umesh Kumar Yadav, Ram Kumar Yadav, Tulasi Prasad Dhungana have been selected as the coordinators of the Maoist Center Saptari, Siraha and Mahottari, respectively.


Similarly, the party has appointed Deepak Yadav as the coordinator of Dhanusha, Devendra Patel as the coordinator of Rautahat, Anil Shrestha as the coordinator of Bara, Kamal Budhathoki as the coordinator of Sarlahi, and Ramdaresh Kushwaha as the coordinator of Parsa.


Rahwar Ansari has been appointed as the coordinator of Birgunj Metropolitan City. In the case of other districts, the Maoist center has stated that a coordinator and co-incharges will be appointed as per the need.
