KATHMANDU, Jan 7:  The CPN (Maoist Center) has decided to hold its general convention in November this year after organizing a six-month long campaign. The party’s Central Committee meeting held from Sunday to Tuesday took a decision to this effect.

During the meeting, two different opinions emerged regarding the timing of the general convention. Some leaders pushed for an immediate special general convention, while others advocated for launching a campaign first and deciding the convention date later.

Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal proposed a six-month campaign leading up to the convention. The Central Committee subsequently agreed to conduct the campaign first, followed by the general convention in November.

Party leaders said that the campaign is part of preparations for the general convention. “The decision to hold the general convention in November came after lengthy discussions. While the exact date is yet to be finalized, it will happen within the month of Mangsir (i.e. mid-November to mid-December,” said a senior leader of the party.

The convention will also address the issue of party leadership handover. "The matter of leadership transfer will be discussed at the general convention, and a resolution will emerge from it," party office bearers confirmed.

Chairman Dahal announced that after the six-month campaign, a Central Committee meeting will be held in July. Leaders close to Chairman Dahal supported holding a regular general convention, while those close to Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma pushed for an immediate special general convention.

Deputy General Secretary Barshaman Pun also expressed support for a special general convention but refrained from demanding an immediate date during the meeting.  Chairman Dahal’s proposal to hold the General Convention in November after a six-month long campaign reflects his efforts to balance differing perspectives within its leadership.
