Tribhuvan Army Club takes home most medals

Seema Tharu and Ashish Chaudhary adjudged best athletes
KATHMANDU, March 16:
Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Sport Club's Seema Kumari Tharu and Ashish Chaudhary were adjudged best athletes in the 40th National Athletics Championship that concluded at the Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwar, Kathmandu on Sunday.

Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) was crowned team champion with 16 gold medals, 17 silver and nine bronze medals.

Seema stood out as the only athlete to create a national record in the championship while Ashish bagged three gold medals and a bronze -- more than any other male athlete.

National women's javelin throw record holder Seema bettered her previous record with the record throw of 39.46 m, breaking her own record she had created in the National Open Championship held in September 2013.

Likewise, Ashish concluded the championship claiming his third medal after winning the men's 200 m sprint clocking 29.85 seconds on Sunday.

He had previously won gold medals in men's 100 m and 400 m sprint and silver in the men's 4x100 m relay with his team APF.

Min Bahadur Chaudhary and Yamsajan Sunar of TAC completed the race at second and third places respectively.

Seema and Ashish bagged a cash award of Rs 10,000 each after being adjudged best athletes in women's and men's categories respectively.

Seema bagged Rs 5,000 for breaking national record.

Meanwhile, Keshari Chaudhary of Nepal Police Club (NPC) won the highest number of medals with four gold medals in individual competitions.

She won her final gold of the competition on Sunday in women's high jump after leaping 1.48 m.

Previously, she won gold in the women's long jump, triple jump, 100 m hurdles.

On Sunday's other events, Dil Maya Karki of APF, Surya Khatri of TAC, Harikumar Rimal of TAC and Rajendra Basnet of TAC won gold medals in their respective events.

Clocking 26.20 seconds, Dil Maya won gold in women's 200 m, Surya won gold in men's high jump leaping 1.93 m, Harikumar won gold in men's 5,000 m sprint with the timing of 03.4 seconds and Rajendra claimed pole position in men's shot put with the throw of 12.50 m.

Kanchhi Maya Koju of TAC also bagged gold in women's 5,000 m sprint completing the distance in 15.6 seconds as Chandrakala Lamgade of NPC won gold in women's shot put with the throw of 10.62 m.

TAC claimed gold in men's 4x400 m relay, ahead of NPC and APF. Likewise, APF triumphed in women's same distance relay leaving behind TAC and Western Region.

Meanwhile, winning 13 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze medals, APF finished second as Western Region finished third with one silver and five bronze medals in team standings.

Altogether, 176 athletes from five developmental regions and three departmental sides participated in the three-day championship.
