Tri-party meet inconclusive, next meeting on Wednesday

KATHMANDU, Nov 6: Although the much-hyped ‘secret’ meeting of the top leaders of three political parties ended inconclusively, leaders say that the two-day discussion has been positive to resolve the political crisis.



The main three political parties, UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, on Saturday expressed their commitment to honestly implement all the past agreements and understandings relating to peace and political process.[break]



Issuing a joint statement after a two-day long ‘secret meeting’ at the Himalayan Height Resort, Hattiban, the parties said they seriously reviewed and discussed the implementation of all such agreements.



In a four-point statement signed by Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, NC president Sushil Koirala and UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal, they also stated that they have realized that they should work on consensus to end current political deadlock and for peace, democracy, constitution writing and protection of national interest.



Reiterating their commitment to national interest, territorial integrity, independence, multi-party democracy, federalism, republic, religious secularism, economic prosperity of people among others, the leaders also decided to remain united and move forward in the transitional period.



“The talks were very positive,” UML chairman Khanal said after the meeting.



They will hold next meeting on November 10 to continue discussion on the agendas.



During their meeting that began on Friday morning, the leaders discussed on six agendas that included implementation of past agreements and understandings, finding basis for understanding among political parties to end the current deadlock, logical conclusion of the peace process, power sharing among political parties, budget crisis and other problems faced by the government and understanding on main points for the draft of new constitution.



"The leaders of all the three parties held discussions on many topics; the discussions are positive and headed towards consensus," NC leader Ram Sharan Mahat said.



Home Minister Bhim Rawal said positive talks were held in the meeting among the top leaders of the three major parties of the country.



The meeting was participated by Maoist chairman Dahal, vice-chairmen Mohan Vaidhya, Baburam Bhattarai, general secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa and Dev Gurung; NC president Koirala, Sher Bahadur Deuba, parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel, Mahat and Krishna Sitaula; and UML chairman Khanal, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary Ishwar Pokharel, K P Sharma Oli, Bharat Mohan Adhikari and Rawal.
