KATHMANDU, Jan 19: Former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Nepal Police, Chhabilal Joshi, accused of being involved in the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud case, remains in police custody after Sunday's court proceedings failed to conclude.
Joshi appeared before the Kathmandu District Court, where his remand hearing was held before the bench of Judge Thakur Prasad Kharel. As the arguments were inconclusive, Joshi would remain in custody until his next court appearance on Monday.
Ex-DIG Joshi’s judicial custody extended by seven days
Joshi faces charges of organized fraud linked to the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative, which is accused of embezzling over Rs 1.193 billion from 690 depositors. Previously, Joshi had been charged with cooperative fraud, organized crime, and money laundering in Kaski District Court, securing release after paying Rs 8.8 million in bail.
A total of 39 individuals have been charged in the case. Among them, Sunita Newa and Kamal Lama were released on bail of Rs 400,000 and Rs 300,000, respectively. Similarly, Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman and former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane was released after posting Rs 600,000 bail.
