CHITWAN, Aug 24: The demand for eggs has increased since the beginning of Bhadra in the Lunar Calendar. As many people, especially Hindus, fast and adopt vegetarian diets during the holy month of Shrawan, egg consumption decreases during that time.

With the onset of Bhadra, the demand for eggs has risen, leading poultry farms to increase prices, said Binod Pokharel, executive director of Daunne Agro Farm Limited. The farms have been setting the prices themselves after the Department of Commercial Supply and Consumer Protection instructed that only producers should set the prices.

As a result, the market price of eggs increased today. Daunne Agro, based in Chitwan, has set the price at Rs 500 per crate (30 eggs). The price of large-size eggs is Rs 495, and medium-sized eggs are Rs 425 per crate.

Similarly, Himchuli Poultry Farm has also increased egg prices. The price of extra-large eggs has increased by Rs 5 per crate, and the price of large and medium eggs has risen by Rs 10, said the Chair of the Farm, Rajendra Lamichhane.

Egg producers are marketing their products through the Nepal Layers Poultry Association. Pokharel, who is also the president of the association, mentioned that 75 percent of poultry farmers have been displaced due to continuous losses in business.

Meanwhile, poultry trader Trilochan Kandel, former president of the Chitwan Industry Association, noted that while the demand for eggs has increased, production has decreased. He shared that about two months ago, 2.5 to 2.6 million eggs were being produced daily, but this has decreased to 2.3 to 2.4 million.
