KATHMANDU, June 28: Chairman of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Mahantha Thakur is under attack from his partymen for inducting 10 new leaders in the Central Committee (CC). Heads of seven of the eight affiliate organizations have criticised the party leadership on the matter. They warned the TDMP leadership of resigning en-masse if the decision is not revoked immediately.

These leaders have also decided not to participate in the village and regional level conventions being organised by the party. The TMDP CC has already assigned them to hold such convention in various districts and villages. [break]

TMDP Chairman Thakur on Sunday appointed Bimal Shrivastav, Purushottam Jha and Ramesh Patel from Parsa, Jaya Prakash Yadav and Jitendra Sinha from Bara, Premwarti Rana from Kanchanpur, Subba Lal Yadav and Bishweshwor Rajak from Saptari, Ram Lakhan Thakur from Kailali and Arun Das from Morang as the new CC members of the party. With the new appointments, TMDP now has 51 CC members.

A notice was put up on the notice board at the party head office in Kathmandu on Sunday informing about the appointments of new CC members. Disgruntled leaders protested the decision, saying that Chairman Thakur did not hold any consultations in the party.

TDMP Student Front Chairman Suresh Mandal, Youth Front Chairman Krishna Sinha, Democratic Female Association Chairperson Chanda Chaudhari, Democratic Professors Association Chairman Udaya Tiwari, Democratic Intellectuals´ Association General Secretary Surendra Jha, Tarai Madhes Disabled Association Chairman Prem Narayan Jha and Democratic Ayurveda Association Chairman Ajay Jha jointly sent a memorandum to the party Chairman Thakur on Monday demanding withdrawal of the decision.

Democratic Peasants Association Chairman Pradip Rai was absent from the meeting of the affiliate organizations as he was out of the valley according to the leaders who signed the joint memorandum.

Democratic Intellectual Association General Secretary Surendra Jha termed the decision taken ahead of the party´s general convention in November ´short-sighted´ and ´undemocratic´. ´´It seems that the chairman was under pressure to make such undemocratic and anti-Madhes decision,” he said. “He seems to have been put under pressure to appoint such persons neglecting experienced and active party leaders,´´ he added.

TDMP Student Front Chairman Mandal said the decision would only make other competent and deserving leaders frustrated. ´´This is a conspiracy to weaken the party as capable leaders are kept at bay while picking names for the central post,´´ he said.

TMDP Joint-General Secretary Jitendra Sonal said he was not officially aware of the recent appointments in the party central committee. “Officially, I don´t know about the decision,´´ Sonal told Republica.
