In the past ten years, Nepal has seen a rapid growth in the technology sector which in-turn has really made internet affordable by general public. Good thing is we can connect to the whole world and use it to the best but with good comes bad and the internet is no exception.[break]
This week on Gennext Chitchat we got hold of four students from Universal College studying B SC (Bio-Chemistry).
“There is whole lot of interesting things on the internet and it´s a great way to learn new things and also view course-related matters online,” says 20-year-old Neha Jha. Indeed, the World Wide Web is probably the best way to learn the ways of the world but this vital resource is also being misused by the youth today. “It is a fact that some of us are Facebook, or any other social networking site, addicts and that is not too good,” says 21- year-old Krishna Sapkota.
According to a survey report published by CWIN Nepal, 74.8 percent of girls and 90.8 percent of boys frequently use the internet on a daily basis. The numbers are likely to increase with the internet connection getting cheaper, affordable and portable.
“I use internet on my phone too because during the load-shedding, internet doesn´t work and the only way out is mobile internet,” shares Krisha. However, 20-year-old Samjhana Sapkota and 21-year-old Khem Raj Giri don´t use internet that often but are on Facebook. “Who isn´t?” questions Samjhana. “It´s such an easy way to find your long-lost friends and keep in touch with everyone you love,” she adds.
True, Facebook is helping people connect to one another and at the same time it´s earning millions of dollars in return, but does it have a dark side to it too? “Definitely it has a dark side but it really depends on the user,” says Khem. He adds that posting rude comments, vulgar pictures are some things he has seen in the recent days. Things like this can easily cause tension and depression.
Facebook is an addiction for sure and so are the games on the social networking site. Games like Farmville, Restaurant City, Hotel City needs the user to frequently log in to virtually feed and keep alive their business and this has lured many people to log in at the mentioned time intervals depriving them of sleep and causing irrelevant anxiety.
“Facebook has become like a new trend and that everyone has to be a part of it,” says Krishna, adding, “Everyone has to be in and be left out of all the talks of the town.” Also, what Krishna does most of the time and enjoys is writing on walls rather than getting engaged in chatting. But the rest three preferred chatting to communicating through walls when they are online.
The Facebook generation seems to be doing pretty well and is aware of the dark side of the internet and the dos and don´ts on the World Wide Web.
Facebook has become this “in-thing” that has lured in all the youngsters and some adult folks as well. Post offices were ousted by emails and now, emails are being ousted by Facebook walls and inbox. As technology progresses, we are yet to see smaller but better inventions. Gone are the days for bigger and better inventions!
