KATHMANDU, Nov 6: Chairman of the Constitutional Committee Nilambar Acharya on Sunday said promulgation of the new constitution is possible in the next six months.

He also said that the country can hold the general election within another six months.[break]

“We need about a year to conclude the twin task of promulgating the new constitution and holding the general election,” Acharya said while addressing a function at Reporters´ Club.

He, however, said that the people should remain vigilant about implementation of the seven-point peace deal reached on November 1 and that the tasks can be accomplished only if the political parties move ahead as per as the sprit of the deal.

“If the political parties do not move ahead as per as the sprit of the seven point deal, the new constitution cannot be written,” added Acharya.

He opined that the first draft of the new constitution can be prepared within a month if the political parties focused on resolving the thorny issues of state restructuring, system of governance and electoral system.

Acharya argued that both the president and the prime minister could turn authoritarian if they are elected directly. “People´s representatives must have the power to stop the president and prime minister from being authoritarian,” he added.
