Kirtipur basketball kicks off
KATHMANDU: Goldengate and Gurukul registered vicotries in the 1st Kirtipur Cup Basketball Tournament that kicked off on Saturday at Naya Bazaar, Kirtipur.
Goldengate edged past NASA 79-60 in the opening match while Gurukul overcame WhiteHouse 75-47.
In the first match, Goldengate bounced back to win the final three quarters after going down 15-16 in the first quarter. The team took the second and third quarters with the scores of 25-19 and 21-9 respectively, then won the last quarter 18-16. Dipendra Maharjan was the highest scorer for Goldengate with 19 points.
In another match, Binod Maharjan netted the highest 16 points in Gurukul´s convincing win over Whitehouse. Gurukul took a commanding 28-11 lead in the first quarter and continued its dominance in the remaining quarters as well. Gurukul took the other quarters 19-8, 20-14, 16-12 to seal an emphatic win.
Meanwhile, the third match scheduled between host Naya Bazar Club, Kirtipur and Nepal Army Club was cancelled due to rain. The match will take place on March 8.
The event, organized for the first time in Nepal in double league format, was inaugurated by Ram Lal Shrestha, chief of Kirtipur Municipality. At the end of the double league, the top four teams among the six participating teams will make it through to the semifinals. All 33 matches of the event organized by Naya Bazaar Club will be held on weekend days.
Unbeaten Tusal moves three points clear
KATHMANDU: Maintaining its unbeaten run, Tusal Youth Club moved three points clear at the top of the table in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League defeating Brigade Boys Club 2-1 at the APF ground in Halchowk on Saturday.
In course of its victory, Tusal came from behind to beat Brigade Boys that had taken an 18th minute lead through Jung Bahadur Rai. Dhiraj Shrestha scored in the 50th minute to cancel Brigade Boys´ lead and take his goals tally to eight, the highest in the B division league. Prem Kyapchhaki then ensured victory for Tusal with the second goal in the 77th minute.
With five victories in seven matches, leader Tusal maintained its grip on the top with 17 points, three points ahead of second-placed Boys Union that has a match advantage over the leader. Brigade Boys dropped one spot to seventh with 10 points from seven matches.
In another match, Shankar Shrestha netted two goals as Swayambhu Club edged past Samajik Youth Club 2-1. Shrestha gave a 56th minute lead to Swayambhu but it was short-lived as Prem Kumar Syangtan leveled the scores in the 63rd minute. But Shrestha restored Swayambhu´s lead in the 72nd minute.
After playing eighth matches each, Swayambhu moved three spots up to sixth with 12 points in its kitty while Samajik remained unchanged in the fourth place with 13 points.
United Youth Club will take on Chyasal Club and Satdobato Youth Club will lock horns with Shree Laligurans Pulchowk Sports Club on Sunday.
