SPORTS BRIEFS: Chartare wins Morang League

BIRATNAGAR, May 17: Chartare Sporting Club of Letang won the title of Morang District Red Bull A Division League Football Tournament on Tuesday. Chartare defeated Samrat Sporting Club of Biratnagar 2-1 in aggregate.



In the first leg held in Biratnagar, Chartare had defeated Samrat 1-0, while the second leg held at Laxmimarga ended in a 1-1 draw. [break]



Eastern Regional Football Association President Santosh Baniya and Morang District Football Association President Dipendra Dhimal gave away awards to the winner and runner-up. Yam Magar of Chartare won the best player and highest scorer awards.



Gauchan, Karki into second round


KATHMANDU: Abhay Gauchan and Akshyat Karki qualified for the second round of the Third KESA Group JTI Open Junior Tennis Tournament on Tuesday. Gauchan beat Suyas Nahata 9-4 while Karki defeated Anugraha Rokka 9-7 in the U-16 boys’ singles category. Chiran Raj Pandey, Arya BC and Sachin Varma enjoyed walkovers. In the U-14 girls’ singles category, Chhimi Sherpa, Rachel Sadif, Mayanka Rana, Janvi Nahata, Mahika Rana and Manjita advanced into the second round.



Jeevan Singh Ghartimagar, Sundar KC, Dipesh Hamal, Sakshyam Karki and Avi Shrestha entered the second round in U-14 boys’ singles category. Aryan Dhungel, Rigdev Singh, Pranav Khanal, Swaraj KC, Dipesh Khatri and Prashant Basnet registered wins in the U-10 boys’ singles category. In the U-12 girls’ singles category, Laxmi Pariyar, Krishna Bista, Ayusha Rai, Priyanka Malla, Kala Tamang, Chhimi Sherpa, Tenzing Sherpa and Sangita Rana qualified for the second round.



St Lawrence badminton


KATHMANDU: Jamuna Karki of Samakhusi Boarding School (SEB), Jyotsna Bhujel of Kot Devi, Niru Shrestha of Prithvi and Rojina Karki of Nepal Police School (NPS) on Tuesday advanced into the pre-quarterfinal round of senior girls’ singles section in the First St Lawrence Valley-wide School Level Badminton Tournament. Jamuna beat Priyanka Chhetri of Ullens 21-19, 21-16, Shrestha saw off Binu Shrestha of Lord Buddha 21-16, 21-15, and Rojina saw off Shraddha Shakya of Delight 21-11, 21-6. Bhujel enjoyed a walkover.



The other players to advance in the same category were Sindu Jameer, Tshering Dikki, Pemba Omu Lama, Shang Di Sherpa, Sushma Lama, Minsu Tamang, Sushmita Budhathoki, Saraswati Basnet, Binisha Gurung, Rojina Nepal and Rojita Nepal. In junior boys’ singles, Bivek Acharya, Suraj Dangol, Anil Lamichhane, Pravin Sharu, Madan Tamang, Devendra Gurung, Jamyang Dorje, Rupesh Khatri, Praful Maharjan, Biplav Karki, Rabi Gurung, Diprish Bajracharya, Dipak Gurung, Jagat Tamang, Susan Rana and Bamdev Gajari made it to the last 16.



Under senior boys’ singles, Purna Bahadur Thapa, Ganesh Rayamajhi, Ashish Thapaliya, Sanjay KC, Rabindra Shiwakoti, Manish Aryal, Shiva Devkota, Suyograj Yakkha, Kumar Tamang and Prajwal Dangol won their respective matches to book pre-quarterfinal berths.



IMS, Everest into T20 quarters


KATHMANDU: IMS College and Everest College on Tuesday entered the quarterfinals of the Inter-college TU BBA Cup T20 Cricket Tournament organized by K and K International College. In the first match, IMS defeated NCC by three wickets at the Army School ground, Bhaktapur.



Winning the toss, NCC scored 89 runs. IMS reached the target in 19.1 overs losing seven wickets. In another match, Everest defeated defending champion K and K by one run. Everest scored 147 runs in 20 overs and bowled K and K out for 146 runs.
