KATHMANDU, Dec 17: Snooker in Nepal has long been lacking regular tournaments, but things seem to be changing for good as corporate houses have started lending their support to the game.

The successful completion of the Republica Corporate Snooker Week, held from December 5-10 at the Corner Bar of Hotel Radisson, heralds a new beginning for the game that has been struggling to make its mark in Nepal.[break]

The tournament organized by Nepal Republic Media in association with Hotel Radisson saw participation of leading corporate houses, banks, financial institutions, hospitality industry, NGOs, INGOs and media houses.

Corporate executives like Radhesh Pant, CEO of Kumari Bank; Sashin Joshi, CEO of NIC Bank; Rakesh Adukia, MD of JSB Financial Tower; Sunil KC, DGM of NMB Bank; Raju Nepal, COO of Citizens Bank and Ashok Sherchan, CEO of Prabhu Finance were present on the final day of the tournament.

Sanoj Moktan of Prabhu Finance won the title while Raywant Bahadur Singh of Himalayan Bank Limited was the runner-up.

The competition not only entertained the participants but also strengthened their solidarity for the development of snooker in Nepal.

Sarbagya Bajracharya, general secretary of Billiards Snooker & Pool Association (BSPA), says that Nepal lacks boards of international standard and that is affecting the performance of Nepali players at the international level.

Bajracharya said that he has also requested the corporate houses to help them import boards to meet the international standard.

“The support from corporate houses has helped a lot in giving recognition to the game in Nepal. We are also hopeful of getting support for the infrastructure development of snooker from the private sector as the National Sports Council has turned a deaf ear to our requests,” said Bajracharya.

An official at JSB Financial Tower, the main sponsor of the Republica Corporate Snooker Week, said they supported Snooker Association as part of their corporate social responsibility. Prabin Naulakha of JSB Financial Tower said that they had also organized snooker tournaments earlier and they readily accepted the proposal.
